30th Birthday
I didn't do anything for my birthday last year (although I did get taken out for a picnic in the UK, which was very nice), partly because I was out of the country and partly because I just didn't feel like it. At least one of the Boggle tournaments featured a birthday cake for me, but that didn't really have the flavor of a birthday party. The last time I had a "real" party was the TMBG concert and potluck (2002).

Since this year is a milestone birthday, and since I've been feeling a bit out of touch with a lot of people lately (including skipping another 30th birthday party and lots of other parties), I've been thinking about actually having a birthday party this year. No clue what exactly I want to do, but I imagine it would be most convenient to have it on Memorial Day weekend. Suggestions are welcome, as are thoughts on your personal decision about whether or not to have a birthday party for yourself.

Well, I am doing a milestone birthday this year, myself. I am planning a brithday party and throwing it myself. I've wondered the same thing, about it's appropriateness, but my intention for the party requires that it be my own labor. So, there you go.

Can you explain what you mean by that? (It must be obvious but I have no clue.) (Yeah, yeah. :)

"Appropriateness" is probably a poor choice of words. I simply have never thrown a birthday party for myself, it's always been someone else throwing it for me. because of that, throwing a party for myself just has an odd feeling to it, like "this isn't how it's done".

I wasn't really talking about the appropriateness of throwing a party for oneself (although I could see how people who are used to having other people throw birthday parties for them might feel weird about throwing a party for themselves), just about how and why people make the decision to celebrate or not celebrate their birthday.

Date is not set. There is certainly the possibility of doing something the weekend before, too. Once I firm up what I want to do, I'll find out who's interested and when they are available.

At this point in the year I always have vague and grandiose plans about having a Party for my birthday. Give it a couple of months and I'll have equally vague, but somewhat more plausible plans about maybe getting some people to come to the pub with me. Fast-forward several procrastinating weeks, nay months, and about 2 weeks before my birthday I'll probably suddenly invite people to aforesaid pub and bemoan the fact that my lack of actual organisation means that few people from out-of-town can make it.

Despite being not bad at organising other things, I still fail every year to break that pattern ;)

I think you should organize a trip to Boston for my birthday :-)

I don't remember what my reasons were for having a preemptive party last year, other than the inconvenience of the actual date relative to my moving out of town. And cake. I wanted cake.

Uh, also, I'll be back in Boston from around May 20-May 31.

So far, I don't think I've planned much for May, so I'd be happy to attend a birthday gathering. I'd even help with the organizing, if you'd like.

I could really use some suggestions for what to do. A picnic with frisbee and some card games or something might be nice, but I'm also considering the possibility of doing something a bit more elaborate and/or unique. I just haven't figure out what that might be.

I'm not one for elaborate plans, so a picnic and such sounds good. Maybe there'll be another concert or something going on? Or an outing to see a play, or a movie, or play laser tag, or go bowling, or roller skating, or hang out on a beach, or go to Waterfire, or something.

Another thought: a barbeque? Tea? Pancake breakfast?

Yet more thoughts

Canoeing on the Charles; mountain climbing; hiking; make your own pizza/sundae; an excursion somewhere; laser tag; paintball; a scavenger hut; finding a letterbox or geocache; T-shirt painting.
