Turns out that the sales rep I spent most of the day with started her own publishing company to publish her husband's sf book, Absolute Values. She told me a bit about it, and it sounds interesting. She said she'd give me an autographed copy, so I'm anxious to check it out. She actually managed to get a distributor, and she got quotes from Piers Anthony and David Brin. Also, since she works for a printer, she was talking to one of their paper suppliers who happened to have some really nice red leather left over from another job, so she was able to use that for the cover.
It's pretty cool that I'm starting to get to know people in the publishing industry beyond editors: authors, printers, other publishers, etc.
