They knew they couldn't get away with it
Bastards. They couldn't tell the truth and say that they were doing this just for the convention. Of course people were going to challenge it. At least they've stopped, but it still pisses me off that they even started, and their whole attitude about it. From The Boston Globe:
Despite vows to continue random bag-screening after the Democratic National Convention, no searches have been conducted on the MBTA since the convention ended late last month, and officials privately acknowledge that there are no plans to reinstate the controversial, first-in-the-nation policy anytime soon.

So now you're complaining that they're not doing it?

I just hate them now. I think it's my job to complain about anything they do.

But, but, but how will we be safe and secure on the T now?!? I mean, there are all those terrorists out there!

Wankers. I hate them. Fucking political lapdogs.

What would you be like if you were being crude?

I'm not so sure you should have asked that question . . .

I gave this much thought, and decided that if I were being crude, I'd have used the word santorum in there. Cheers!

I 'knew' this would be the case

...and I stand by my earlier statement that their choice of wording was very deliberate. By leaving the switch on, the MBTA can effectively start and stop bag-searching activity at its own leisure, as much as it wants. It can start again months from now, for some reason, and not feel the need to make any additional announcements or warnings.

Now you've really creeped me out even more. How insidious!
