Am I perverse?|
I have a perverse urge to change one or two instances of "angle" in my chapter to "angel" and see who catches it, and how far along it gets before someone catches it.

Perversion aside, I imagine that since you've at least as much experience in publishing as me, we already know that the result will be nobody catching it, you forgetting about it, and it seeing print.
I'm pretty sure one of my ORA books has a back-cover copy paragraph that begins something like "Please delete this graf. XML is a technology for..."
I don't even want to talk about things I did during my short career at the Bangor Daily News.

Yes, there are some things that manage to get through, but our editorial services department seems to be exceptionally good. I think the sorts of things that tend to get through our books are last-minute changes for the most part. I'm not quite at th epoint with this job where I'd intentionally do something like that, though. In fact, I'm not sure I ever could. It would be a really hard thing for me to do, even if I knew (as I would in this case) that no one would have any way of knowing that I did it intentionally.

Right, wasn't meaning to doubt the quality of your company's editorial process (or ORA's, for that matter), but intentional changes to actual copy, with the intent of later deletion, seem to have an uncanny knack for staying alive.
I recall that message being in at least one textbook I had in one of my journalism courses: never put jokey words into copy. Even if it's all electronic. Because someday you will forget about it, and nobody will catch it, and you'll look like such an ass the next day. (And yet, this is part of what got me into trouble at the BDN, unfortunately...)
So yes, you are wise to Resist. :)
No, you're a preserve.

...I've typed "angel" at work too many times to count, but always seem to catch it...
...And though you may not be perverse on this topic, that doesn't mean you aren't at all :-)....
