My uncle talking about my oldest cousin (he's 18 or 19):
Last Saturday he got a call from his reserve unit with Notice of Intent to Activate. Looks like a June 1 date to head to Pendeleton for 2 months of orientation with an active duty unit, then the Suni Triangle for 10-12 months. Wish he wasn't such a good marksman, though. He qualified saw-gunner last month with puts him at point for the unit with a large caliber automatic tripod-mounted machine gun - the belt of ammo feeds from the side.

I know you're quoting your uncle, but it was a call, not an e-mail or letter, so the typo is yours.

"Pendeleton" should be "Pendleton" and "with puts" should be "which puts."

That said, I hope your cousin has a safe tour and neither has to use his markmanship skills nor be put in harm's way.

Unless I misread this the first time and you are quoting a letter or e-mail. The whole "uncle talking about" makes that unclear.

Can't wait until your time is up. I mean, it's extremely unlikely, but it's still not a pleasant thought to have lingering in the back of one's mind.

By the time he makes it over there, I wonder if he'll even get a "3 more soldiers killed in Iraq" line somewhere in the media.

I'm very not worried about getting called to active service. They haven't even called me any sort of annual check in. And besides, it's mostly Army and Marines types over there. And Air Force intel (if they would even put me in such a slot, considering my clearances have expired :) ) would probably be outside the borders of Iraq, anyway.

Not sure what you mean about what media info your cousin might be getting - surely we'll still have troops there getting shot at for years yet.

I mean that, if he gets killed, I wonder if it will even rate a mention in the media over here. What's another soldier or two?

Is there a place where one can check lists of those killed? A college friend of mine is out there right now, and every time I hear about another soldier killed, I can't help wonder.
