Long division
I'm proofreading an interactive instructor (an worked-out example with audio) on division of whole numbers. I remember when I first learned how to do long division (I wonder if they call it long division now. Probably not). I remember what school I was in, so that narrows it down to 3rd or 4th grade. I remember thoroughly enjoying doing long division. There was just something . . . orderly? satisfying? . . . about it. I loved doing my long-division homework. I think I may have even just done long division when I ran across two numbers, even when it wasn't for homework. And I still get satisfaction from doing division, whether I write it out or do it in my head.

Yes, I remember the joys of long division! I forget when I learned it, but it was late. 5th or 6th grade, I think. But I was so enraptured of following the process and seeing the numbers dwindle to the the final solution that I even took to writing down random two- and three-digit numbers and dividing them, just for the fun of doing the arithmetic!

(not that i didn't used to sit in calculus class bored and typing random long numbers into the calculator and trying to reduce them to their lowest primes.)
