What I've done today besides work

Well, I've done some work. Not much, but some. Otherwise, I've:

  • Done my normal email and LJ.
  • Worked on a program for the current WESUN puzzle (I got working what I'd been trying to figure out, and it's running now. It's slow, but it should get there, hopefully more efficiently than my initial version).
  • Took a call from majes and acted as mathematical consultant. Also offered to write a Perl program to solve some problem of his at work.

I'm sure there are other things, too, but those are the most notable.

Took the 104 to Malden this morning, figuring that the bus ride was a bit shorter and also that getting a seat beats possibly not even getting on the train. The bus was late, but it got there only about 30 seconds after the first bus going the other way, so I really didn't lose out on that front. Times were probably equivalent, but I can't say more than that, since I didn't keep a close eye on the time.

I actually ate breakfast this morning at home. I can't remember the last time I did that. Thanks to a ride home yesterday from magid and a stop at the store, I was able to acquire soy milk, cereal, grapefruit, and avocados. Cereal fro breakfast, and I brought two avocados to work. I've already eaten one,and I'll probably eat the other one in an hour or two. I will most likely supplement that with something from the vending machine later. I need to figure out good, portable things that I can easily make and bring in. We'll see.

WESUN solved

Name a breakfast food in 7 letters. Add the letter F. Rearrange the resulting 8 letters to get the name of a dinner entree. Note: Both parts of the answer are generic terms in the dictionary. What food is it?

While my program was chugging away, I thought I'd just scan the file I'd made with 8-letter words that contain f. It's only about 3900 words, so it wasn't too big of a list. Also, I skipped a lot of the words beginning with f (I wish I had thought of that sooner), since it was unlikely to have been made into a puzzle if the answer began with an f.

Anyway, I found it by scanning the list. Whee. I probably won't submit it, since I have a feeling that this will get a lot of submissions, so the chances of winning are smaller than usual. Still, it'll make a good entry for the Compendium (it feels like it's been so long since I last updated that. Man, it's been a long month).

Dream remembered in the elevator

I was in an elevator, waiting for it to close. Someone came toward the elevator just as it was closing. I tried searching for the button to keep the doors open, but there were a lot of buttons, and I was unfamiliar with the layout. It closed before they could get there. I gave an apologetic look just as the doors were closing, somehow conveying with that look that I was unfamiliar with the layout of the buttons. After the door closed, though, I found the buttons, and noticed that they were shaded green so that they would stand out and could be easily found.
