Teaching Tip
From something I'm proofreading at work (yes, I've actually started doing work):
Some students may use the reciprocal of the slope formula and find run over rise rather than rise over run. Ask those students if they can run while seated. When they respond that they cannot, point out that they must first rise before they can run. Since rise must come first, it is written first as the numerator.

I mean, Jebus. I suppose I would have a hard time coming up with meaningful teaching tips as well (this is on a two-age spread of tips for new teachers), but I hope I wouldn't write something like this.

There is some utter garbage in every teacher's edition I've seen. Nothing specific comes to mind right now, but I've seen stuff at least as bad as this. (Was it under a "Kinesthetic Learning" head? :-)

What, tips for old teachers and tips for young teachers? If so, that was definitely a tip for old teachers.

It took me a while to figure out what the hell you were talking about.

I think I'll leave that typo there. It will never achieve the status of "Welcome to Marylnad", but it's decent nonetheless.

I've started editing my posts if I notice a typo right away. However, if someone else notices a typo (and it's not in a URL), I'll generally leave it, since it feels like "cheating" if i edit my post based on something someone else saw.

That's weird. :-)

i'm usually weird in exactly that way. (unless it's bubblebabble corresting me. then it's not cheating, it's self-preservation!)

my "teh" problem is too prevalent to really worry about my typing anymore. I just run spellchecks when it's a real document. my LJ? man, too much effort.

Sorry, it was vague. And it could have been much, much funnier, if I only had access to a better brain.

Strange words coming from a copy editor. You have no objection to helping others cheat, but you won't do it yourself? You'll dish it out but you won't take it?

Blah, I suck at humor. Shoot me now.

I don't know, but it just made me bust up laughing (the startlingness and the randomness, not that I think the gruesomeness is funny).

I laughed too, but I'm afraid that was because I thought the gruesomeness (in this particular case) was funny.

It's the result of typing "shoot me now" into Google's image search engine.

"Shoot" doesn't seem to apply, really. "Munch," perhaps.

... and here I was carefully not using "eat."
Hm. "I didn't need that head," is probably another place not to go, either.

Oh, that's funny (but I agree with magid that "shoot" doesn't seem quite right--unless this is a frame from something with additional context that would make it so).

Ok, you may all think I'm lame now, but I could never freakin' remember which came first, except when I was using it _all_ the time. Stupid little things like that help some of us "special" people.

A mnemonic is fine. Assuming that an eighth-grader will give you the answer you expect for a question like that is ludicrous.

Yeah, they're postulating a remarkably genteel exchange.

"Now, Jimmy, can you run while seated?"
"No, ma'am, I cannot."
"Indeed not. You must first rise before you can run."

True. Darn kids

Maybe it was intended to be used in a rhetorical fashion: "Now, can you run before you've gotten out of - risen - from your chair? Of course not. Therefore . . . " *background sounds of smartass answers to the rhetorical question*
