Probably the most important thing to take away from that article is that a self exam is no substitute for regular mammograms, since lumps that you can feel are frequently too advanced already.

That's quite true - but it's hard to get regular mammograms for no reason. My sister was 26 when she was diagnosed - even with the history that our mother had breast cancer we couldn't get regular mammograms ok'd by the doctors. It wasn't until my sister was diagnosed that I started getting regular mammograms.

It's not that the doctors don't want to do it - but younger tissue is harder to read so even if you do get mammograms regularly it might not be caught that early because of the firmness of the breast tissue and fat in younger breasts.
