Eurographics 2008, Crete
So, this year's Eurographics conference has been moved to April (it's usually in September) and is taking place in (on, I guess) Crete. I've just confirmed that I'm attending, and I'm seriously considering doing a week there before the conference. Has anyone been there? Any suggestions? Should I really try to make it to the mainland or any of the other islands? Anyone want to tutor me in Greek before I go (although I don't suppose Classical Greek will do me all that much good)?

I bet it's warm in Crete in April

So, how much weight do I have to lose to fit into your suitcase?

A little searching reveals that at least one airline (and maybe all?) won't allow you to check bags that weight more than 100 pounds.

"April: Spring time in Crete with medium temperatures and low rainfall. Crete is full of wildflowers and it is magnificent."

Come with! I do much better on vacations when it's not just me.

The hotel web site sucks. Every date I tried (including during the conference) told me that they had no openings. Do you already have flight/hotel reservations?

And AA didn't say that they had partners that flew there, but I could always call them to make sure.

We don't already have reservations as far as I know. I don't think any plans have been made, actually.

However, Crete is less than half the size of Massachusetts, and I don't have any particular plans to stay near the conference site if I'm going to be there for a week or so beforehand. Something I read online indicated that it was pretty easy to get rooms at various places around the island as long as it wasn't school holiday time (which early April isn't).

Heraklion might be a good base, as it's where the airport is and is the largest city on Crete (and fourth largest in Greece).
