I'm slow, but I get there
I read yesterday's xkcd yesterday and didn't get it. It wasn't until this morning, lying in bed, that I got it. I think this means I need to re-read Ender's Game and possibly read the new books for the first time (I think I read the first of the new books, but I'm not entirely sure).

Since you didn't ask, I won't spoil it, but feel free to ask.

The pun is on the two meanings of the gate being down. One is that it's not functioning, but the sneaky one is a reference to thinking of the enemy's gate as "down" rather than "across", since you're weightless and direction doesn't matter. Since it's been a while since I've read the book, I forget the exact reason that was important.

ohhh! okay, i get it now. thank you for explaining. i feel dumb for not getting that!

now i feel like i need to read it again. wasn't there some deal with the battle room where ender convinced everyone to turn upside-down (from the direction they entered the battle room), because that was the correct orientation to be in order to attack the enemy gate? it was something like that.

I had to read comments to get it too.

Yeah, he had everyone move toward the enemy feet-first -- minimum profile for incoming fire, and if you do get hit it's only the leg part of your suit that gets disabled.

Well worth a re-read, as well as the new "Shadow" series that revisits the timeline from Bean's perspective. (Though the latter series degrades badly in the last couple books.)
