Phone plan
I had thought my current mobile phone plan (the cheapest one) didn't include national long distance. However, looking at my current bill, I see my calls to my mom (Maryland) and my dad (New York) are charged against my regular minutes and don't have any extra charges associated with them. I guess either I misunderstood (like, maybe my plan charges when I'm out of my local area, but not for calls outside my local area when I'm in my local area) or they upgraded the plan. In any case, I guess the only consideration for whether or not to get a land line is the reception at my place.

call your cellphone carrier and confirm that. You could have a northeast / mid-atlantic plan. (Say, the area that Verizon inhabited when it was Bell Atlantic.) Roaming charges are icky, and you don't want them. :-)

Well, I pretty much never call from outsidew the area, and the only people I generally call outside the area are my parents, so it doesn't really matter to me.

you don't want to know if you can make free calls from a conference in California?
